Authentic NIH "Science" Hair Shirts!

I keep reading that these guys are being asked to live like
Monks. Have they passed out the hair shirts yet? Maybe NIH should fast
on every Friday.
* From Washington Post: "Last week, in an e-mail that drew a fresh
round of groans from NIH scientists, some research leaders were
advised to file formal 'outside activity' requests for every
scientific journal for which they occasionally review article
submissions -- a routine, unpaid professional activity not
previously subject to oversight" (Doh! I thought that was part of
their duty).
* From Science: "NIH approval is now required for any outside
employment, whether or not for compensation, or any self-employed
business activity, even singing in a choral group or selling
artwork: 'It suggests the NIH owns our lives away from work'."
* From LA Times: "Protesting NIH staff scientists and members of
Congress opposing the new regulations would have us think [the NIH
director] intends to bulldoze the agency's 300-acre campus in
Bethesda, Md., and turn it into a garment-district sweatshop", then
go on saying new rules "don't go far enough".
