How to break this problem down help

1/x = x/1+x
can be drilled down to
x squared = 1+x
can be drilled down to
1 = x squared - x

How do I get this to the golden ratio of

(1+sqrt{5})/2

Any explanation to help out an old man such as myself would be appreciated please!
