I have taught intro. stats. to college students for about 15 years and
I assume very little in the way of algebra backgound. Statistics is
not mathematics! My students are a year older than your AP stats.
students are likely to be, but they are definitely not the kids who
take AP courses in high school! For me, they need to know about
signed numbers, the order of operations, and how to plug numbers into
a formula. The book I use (Siegel) explains the calculations in a
manner similar to the instructions for an income tax return. (Moore
and McCabe, in contrast, assumes that simply printing a formula is
enough -- there is often not even one worked example.)
