Matlab gradient function::

this uses a finite difference approach to solution.
it applies forward difference to first and last data points and applies
central differencing to the data between::
X F dF/dX
0 3 (10-3)/(1-0)
1 10 (1-3)/(2-0)
2 1 (1-10)/(2-1)
