Why <no subject>?

This numeracy discussion list is awkward and difficult to use. It has the feel of a "list" from the primitive 1980's era of Internet development. Be that as it may, I would like to figure out a way around the situation that a new thread or a reply post may end up listed as "no subject>" and with "numeracy-approval" as the author. That's very unsatisfactory and has to be a cause of the low usage of this forum (or "list").
So I am experimenting with the functionalities that are present here to see if I can control the outcome at all.
So I have used my username for my Math Forum account ('ChuckR'), gone to the Numeracy Discussion, clicked on New Topic, entered a subject and now I am previewing it.
I have previewed it, so I'll preview it again but this time I'll click to submit it. Here goes.
