Is there 'proof' that math builds critical thinking skills?

Is there research that shows that math builds critical thinking skills
or is this just an idea that seems correct but has not been
empirically tested? There is research showing a correlation between
math and critical thinking but I am looking for research that supports
a cause and effect relationship.
