PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week
"Among the incorrect solutions, the biggest mistake was to make
assumptions without checking them. When I first saw the
problem, I assumed the shape had to be a square because it
looked square and was made out of squares. But I knew that I
was making an assumption. Boy was I surprised to find out...."

CALCULATION NATION UNVEILS NEW GAME

Calculation Nation recently unveiled its tenth free online math
game. Called neXtu, it starts with a tessellation consisting of
hexagons, squares, and triangles, and challenges students to
strategically place geometric pieces -- or capture
their opponent's.
Part of NCTM's Illuminations project, Calculation Nation uses
the power of the Web to let students from anywhere in the world
challenge each other. At the same time, students challenge
themselves by investigating significant mathematical content and
practicing fundamental skills at the elementary and middle
grades levels. Each game provides parents and educators with an
explanation of the math in the game and lists related resources
from Illuminations.

CONDUCT EXPERIMENTS ON BOARD THE FINAL SPACE SHUTTLE FLIGHT

The National Center for Earth and Space Science Education
(NCESSE) invites school districts across the U.S. to participate
in the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP).
Designed as a keystone national science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education initiative to
engage and inspire America's next generation of scientists and
engineers through immersion in real science, SSEP provides a
unique and historic opportunity for students to propose
experiments to fly aboard the final flight of STS-135, Space
Shuttle Atlantis.
Apply by March 15, 2011, for an experiment slot in a real
microgravity research mini-laboratory flying on Atlantis.
NCESSE will then guide your district through an experiment
design competition. Additional SSEP programming leverages the
flight experiment design competition to engage your entire
community -- students, teachers, families and the public --
embracing a Learning Community Model for STEM education.
