PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week
"A lot of students showed that they know how to read a diagram when it looks like you aren't given very much information. Nice work, everyone! But there was one thing in particular that most students didn't explain very well, if they explained it at all...." - Annie, commenting on the FunPoW's Latest Solution

ELEMENTARY MATH ENRICHMENT
http://math.schaubroeck.net/school.html
Earlier this week, a math professor wrote in to share the enrichment materials she developed last semester in conjunction with Colorado Springs School District 11. Suitable for accelerated 4th and 5th graders, Dr. Schaubroeck's 70 lessons, grouped into units, include solutions and teacher guides:
- Ancient Mathematics (Mayan math, in base 20; and Egyptian math, which lacks zero) - Baseball Statistics - Fibonacci Numbers - Games of Skill - Graphs and Networks - Iteration - Mobius Bands - Pick's Theorem - Polygonal Numbers - Statistics in the Library - Tangram Puzzles
Schaubroeck, who teaches at the United States Air Force Academy, asks that "users voluntarily send a quick email to let me know that they are using my materials." Just click the word "email" at the end of the first paragraph of the link above, or refer to the bottom of her PDF downloads.
Schaubroeck let us know about her lessons by suggesting them to the Internet Math Library, which today boasts over 10,000 math and math education websites. Share your own by visiting

Now taking place: math education conversation of the hour
"We understand what is technically mathematically correct, but the issue is, is it worth taking 33% of the credit off on this question because of that concept on an Algebra 1 exam?" - Katherine, posted to the secondary (grades 9-12) discussion group of the Association of Math Teachers of New York State

NBA MATH HOOPS' CLASSROOM KIT NATIONAL GIVEAWAY
http://nbamathhoops.org/news/
NBA Math Hoops is giving away their math curriculum classroom kits to middle school teachers and after school program coordinators.
NBA Math Hoops' card game leverages the influence that National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) stars have on American youth. Gameplay simulates a regulation basketball game, with pairs of students racing against a shot clock to do math correctly for a chance to take a shot with a member of their personally drafted team of NBA and WNBA players, complete with those players' real shooting percentages. Math explorations allow students to investigate and make meaning of the intricacies of the game, and provide multiple opportunities for students to apply many of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Mathematical Practices.
The classroom kit giveaway, jumpstarted by the Hasbro Foundation, anticipates NBA Math Hoops' national launch this autumn. Apply for your kit, valued at $300, here:
