QAMA CALCULATOR
http://qamacalculator.com/
A calculator that "thinks only if you think, too," QAMA requires the operator to first enter a reasonable estimate.
QAMA encourages rounding and rapid back-of-the-envelope reckoning, but does not tolerate errors of magnitude or sign, or of basic operations with single digits.
Ilan Samson, "inventor-in-residence" at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) at the University of California, San Diego, purposely priced his device low to motivate routine use, and get people "into the habit of never calculating without thinking and understanding," irrespective of their ages.
Learn more about QAMA's scope, tolerances, built-in "alert" system that flashes red lights when in "non-thinking" (conventional calculator) mode, and other special features at the qamacalculator.com site, now accepting its first orders.

Now taking place: math education conversation of the day
"A couple of days ago I logged into Facebook to see that 4 of my friends all had a birthday that day. Being the nerd that I am, I immediately tried to figure out the probability of this occurrence. I have run through a couple of scenarios, (binomial and 493 simultaneous independent events) both of which have much smaller probabilities than I would have thought. I also tried applying the birthday paradox logic, but just confused myself, so I thought I would throw it out there for some summer fun." - Heather, posted to the ap-stat discussion

NAMING SYMMETRIES FOR CHARITY
https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/naming_symmetries
An Oxford mathematician has discovered some significant new symmetrical objects -- and for a donation of GBP 10, you can name them.
Donations go to Common Hope, an educational charity supporting and empowering children and their families in Guatemala through education. See the list of previous donors, learn more about certificates issued and autographed by mathematician Marcus du Sautoy, and more.
Sautoy serves the University of Oxford as its Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics.

Now taking place: math education conversation of the day
"Finland is the current fashionable flavor for math, yet their language is truly atrocious for counting. The number 18 is 'kahdeksantoista,' meaning '8 of the second,' which is perhaps sillier than our dyslexic 'eighteen.' I am not optimistic any arithmetic simplifiers will catch on in the USA as it, Liberia, and Myanmar refuse to embrace base ten." - Jonathan, posted to the math-teach discussion
