Dixie, this is not a new dilemma  we had to deal with it back in the 60's and 70's.

Most of our kids who do physics C are coenrolled in Calculus BC. It does bug me that the physics teacher introduces basic derivative and integral rules without rigorous development. They know HOW, but not WHY. If he were to rearrange his topics slightly, it wouldn't be a big deal because we will have covered all of the calculus he will need fairly early in the year. We basically maintain peaceful coexistence and the kids know that I expect them to learn the math to a much deeper level. What math he needs, he teaches as it comes up. When I sometimes get to it later, the kids' lightbulbs go on and they say "Oh! That's what he's been going on about!!" We have good AP results in both subjects in a very diverse, working class high school.

Do any of you teach in schools which permit students to enroll in AP Physics C (calculusbased) without prior completion of Calculus ABbc?
If so, what preparation do you provide (or require students to obtain independently)?
Is Physics offered in the fall or spring semester? Is there a requirement to be concurrently enrolled in either Calculus AB or BC?
We've done some hasty frontload supplementing for the few students this affects at our school (AP Physics is relatively recent here), but would like to investigate whether a more systematic intervention is in order.
My counterpart in physics will ask her AP community, too. I'm looking for a calculus perspective because I feel like this affects the way the AB course "develops" for these students if they learn all the nuts and bolts in a very compressed span of time.
