Maltlab & persistent Mac system errors

We're having a persistent problem and would appreciate either advice or
commiserations.

We run Matlab 4.2c on a powermac 7200/90 with 40 M of RAM running Mac OS
7.5.5. This should be fast... generally it is not. But our primary problem
is frequent system crashes which are not linked to any identifiable
events.

These crashes occur independantly of what Matlab is doing. We have also
taken care to eliminate all concievable outside causes. They occur with
all non Mac OS extensions turned off. They occur when only Matlab and
Finder are running. Crashes do not occur in any other application. They
have increased in frequency as we have updated from Mac OS 7.1 to 7.3 to
7.5.1 to 7.5.5. Even though each update was put in place because we were
advised that they would eliminate these errors.

This leads us to conclude that they are due to some flawed interaction of
Matlab 4.2c and MacOS system 7.

Any suggestions?
