String Array

Dear All,

Could anybody tell me how I can define a string array
in MATLAB, in which each item of the array is a string?

I have tried the following:

A = ['abc','def'];

But MATLAB seems to pack the six alphabets together.

I would like A(1) = 'abc' and A(2) = 'def'

Thanks for your help!

Shamson
