Question: Saving Plots Using -dhpgl

I made a bunch of plots and tried to save them all to the same file using
HPGL (which I assume means HP Graphics Language, or something like that).
I wanted them all in the same file for convenience, so I appended each plot
to the end of the file, using:

print -dhpgl -append hpplot.hgl

When I was done the file only contained the last plot. Each plot had over-
written the one before. I checked the options in the help utility and as
nearly as I can figure out I was using the right options. I can produce good
plot files if I use a different file for each plot but I'd like to know what
I was doing wrong.

Am I using the wrong options for print?
Can you only append plots in a postscript file?
Is this a bug?
Is this some kind of machine-dependent thing? I'm using an HP 9000/770/J210
workstation with HP-UX 10.01.

This isn't exactly the most serious problem in the world, but any advice
anybody can contribute would be appreciated. Thanks.
