I've recently tried to use the assignin function. Much to my dismay
it appears that assignin cannot be used to assign a value to any
subpart of a variable. For example, you cannot say:

assignin('base','x(1)',1)

The same holds true for structures, etc. In fact, basically all you
can do with assignin is create an entirely new variable in the
designated workspace.

This seems less than ideal. Is this a bug or a feature or a wish
list item?
