N maximum values of an array

Given an arbitrary numerical array, is there a function to return N maximum
values, preferably with indices? I understand that I can do such a thing
with SORT but that uses more time than it should (think N = 2).
Forgive me if it has been asked before, I have no idea which key words to
look for in this case (maximum is obviously too broad).
