If I have ~10 figures to save one by one, ML never seems to remember the directory where Fig N is saved: for Fig N+1 I have to navigate down the entire tree for its to be saved in the proper place (usually close in the tree to Fig N). All my scripts have the recent dir recall implemented, but the default ML behavior seems to not remember the recent dir. Is there a way to fix this?

If you save the figure using print from the command line, it's easy:
pth='d:\MyDirectory\Plots\';
print('-depsc','-tiff',[pth 'Plot1'])

now up arrow and change 1 to 2
print('-depsc','-tiff',[pth 'Plot2'])

etc
