Detect devices connected to a serial port without using *IDN?

Hi,

To find the attached devices I cycle through all the available serial ports and send a *IDN? command and look for a response.

Due to the timeout, it takes too long.

Other than changing the timeout duration and sending *IDN? command, is there a way to search for connected devices on the COM ports?

Paraphrasing: All I need to know is whether there are any devices currently connected to my PC via the serial-ports (and if so, return the COM port #s). Is this possible without *IDN?

Thanks.
