Showing your work helps when you are trying to study from it. If all you
write is the answer you can not use it as an example should you happen to
forget what you did.

More importantly, I think, showing your work shows your reader what you did.
If someone else is going to understand what you did you have to write
something down. You can not get credit (marks) for understanding the
methods if you do not show your work.

When you are writing a story you follow the rules of grammar and the english
language so that your reader understands what you mean.

When you are writing a math solution you show the steps so that your reader
understands what you mean.
