Position Announcement - Monroe Community College, Rochester, NY
Instructor of Mathematics (three tenure-track openings anticipated)
Screening to Begin: Anticipated January 15, 2001
Responsibilities: At Monroe Community College, mathematics faculty are responsible for teaching courses ranging from developmental mathematics through linear algebra. Successful applicants are subject to assignment at the Brighton Campus and/or the Damon City Campus. In addition to teaching and maintaining accurate records on students, tenure-track faculty develop new educational materials, assist with curriculum review, advise and counsel students, and hold office hours. Tenure-track faculty also perform professional and administrative duties and participate in departmental and institutional functions, including departmental meetings and committee work. Faculty carry out these responsibilities in an effort to realize the college's mission. The mission of Monroe Community College is to provide a high quality learning environment to a diverse community. In offering education and training opportunities, student success is the College's highest priority; as such, the College is committed to access, teaching excellence, comprehensiveness, lifelong learning, partnership building, and economic development.
Qualifications: The following qualifications are required or desirable where noted. Further qualifications are criteria that Monroe Community College highly values and will be assessed, considered, and reviewed throughout the process.
1. a) Minimum for a tenure track appointment: Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics, or Master's Degree in a related discipline with at least 15 graduate or post-calculus semester credits in mathematics required; recent teaching experience preferred. Evidence that the Master's Degree has been awarded must be received by July 1.
b) Minimum for a temporary appointment: Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics, or in a related discipline with emphasis in Mathematics required; recent teaching experience preferred. Evidence that the Master's Degree has been awarded must be received by July 1.
2. Evidence of successful teaching experience in mathematics at the secondary, college or university level preferred. Recent teaching experience preferred.
3. Ability to teach mathematics courses from basic algebra through calculus, differential equations and linear algebra, including statistics and mathematics for non-science majors.
4. Knowledge of or experience in implementing a variety of teaching strategies.
5. Commitment to the appropriate use of technology as an instructional tool.
6. Experience with or willingness to learn electronic communication within a networked environment.
7. Willingness to work as part of a team.
8. Sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
9. Good verbal and written communication skills.
10. Commitment to continuing professional development.
11. Willingness to serve students through academic advising, mentoring, etc.
12. Willingness to serve the department through committees and other departmental activities.
13. Willingness to serve the college through governance and college-wide committees.
