Adding Fractions

In a recent post Dom Rosa said about learning to add and subtract
fractions " The next day, my classmate Walter E. Maciejowski showed me
how you multiply the denominators and cross-multiply to obtain the
numerator."

Did Walter say anything about why it might make sense to follow this
procedure?
