Regarding your request for algebra tutorial software, I recommend a product
called Algebra published by Broderbund. I've seen it on the Mac, and I
think it's available for Windows. You might want to look at a computer
algebra system like MathCAD, Theorist, or the IBM Toolkit for Interactive
Mathematics (as opposed to the older Math Exploration Toolkit).

Regarding your marathon analogy, if only learning mathematics was as
well-defined as running a 26.21875 mile race.
