Kent,
Our text does teach decimals before we even touch fractions. Then we treat
it as 2 separate topics and I don't recall that, at 5th grade, we even
touch on the connection between the two. I'm not sure my kids could
handle. As I mentioned before, most of my kids are still at the "what's a
fraction" stage. I do a lot of Bill orders a pizza and eats 1/2 of the
sausage pizza that is cut into 8 pieces. How many pieces did he eat? They
might understand Bill ate 50% of the pizza - but never .50 of the pizza.
