I am very sorry to have to say that Richard Skemp died yesterday (22 June 1995). He was a founder member of PME (or IGPME as it was first called), ran PME3 at Warwick University almost single handed and became the second President of PME. I am therefore e-mailing all regional contacts of PME in the hope that the message can be passed on to as many members as possible in a short time.
It was discovered that he had non-Hodgkinson's lymphoma at the end of 1994. He had chemotherapy and was able to stay at home where he was nursed by his wife, Valerie. They were a devoted and self-contained couple. Valerie looked after him and protected him from all visitors. I was able to visit him only twice in the last six months. On both occasions he was clear and lucid, despite the effects of the drugs. I last spoke to him on the telephone and it was the old Richard I always knew. Valerie told me that he was peaceful to the last.
I know Valerie is feeling the sudden loss and I would very much appreciate it if anyone who knew Richard, or even his work would feel able to write a few words to Valerie in tribute to him, perhaps a story they can tell of something he said or did. If you can do this, please either send it by post to her at

Alternatively you may wish to e-mail a tribute for him to my e-mail address (firstname.lastname@example.org) and I will get it nicely printed and give to Valerie. As of today funeral arrangements are yet to be made, but I understand Richard will be cremated towards the end of next week (ending Friday 30 June).
