Jones International University, an on-line institution based near Denver,
has become the first U.S. university operating entirely on line to earn
accreditation, the school is announcing today.

Jones International, established in 1995, was accredited Friday by the
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, one of six U.S. regional
accrediting bodies.

The institution's programs are geared toward adults.

Regional accreditation, which signals that an institution meets certain
standard criteria, makes Jones International eligible for federal funding
and enables students to seek employer tuition reimbursement and to transfer
courses and credits.

On-line universities have created challenges for accrediting organizations
because such institutions have no geographical boundaries and accrediting
groups traditionally have operated by region.

How other virtual universities are handling accreditation:

* Western Governors University, backed by governors in at least 17 states
and opened last year, has been determined eligible for accreditation by an
interregional committee that was created to develop standards for WGU and
similar institutions.

* The Open University of the United States, an independent university that
is associated with the Open University in London, is working toward
accreditation from a U.S. regional accrediting association that covers
Delaware, where it has incorporated. The Open University also offers
classroom-based courses.

* At California Virtual University, courses are offered through accredited
colleges and universities statewide.
