I have really enjoyed reading this video paper. I admire the groups'
struggles with these important issues. When I read the introduction, I
took special interest when you mentioned the role of discourse in
supporting students' valuation of their own thinking.
What I have found in my own research and teaching is that this
particular goal is best met by establishing norms for discourse over
time. That is, such a radical change in students' view of
mathematical authority cannot be achieved in a single lesson or
interaction.
