This problem has several nice extensions that I thought I would share with you:
1) Are the measurements included in the problem reasonable amounts to use?
2) How many of each ingredient (loaves of bread, jars of peanut butter, jars of jelly) are needed to make the total number of sandwiches?
3) How much would these ingredients cost at your local grocery store?
4) Would the cost be different if you lived somewhere else?
...And I'm sure you'll come up with more that I invite you to share with the rest of us.
I hope you enjoy using this problem with your students, and that it doesn't make you (or them) too hungry :-)
Happy problem solving!
-Lisa
