HAH! They were just surfing the knowledge wave of their time, picking up
the odd pretty shell on the shore, while the great ocean of truth waited
unexplored before them. (Hmmm... didn't someone else say that?)

Anyway, the Pythagoreans clearly regarded this root-two business as
a barnacle on the hull of their geometrical vessel of perfection.


Hey - it occurs to me that the Pythagoreans missed out on a great chance to
have a particular animal as their symbolic beast.... the STARFISH !
