Description: The theory of dimension for finitely-generated linear spaces was created by Hermann Grassmann and is given in detail in Chapter 1 of his Ausdehnungslehre of 1862. The main part of the present paper is an annotated translation of the relevant portion of that book. The paper begins with with an introduction to Grassmann's work on linear algebra.
