NCTM San Diego
Presentation Summary

This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.

This session will describe how a group of first grade teachers in Ithaca, New York, created, and later revised, an authentic assessment to replace standardized achievement tests and how that assessment was extended from Kindergarten to Third Grade through teacher initiatives. The assessment consists of multiple ways of looking at children. Actual examples of children's and teachers' work will be shown including:
- teacher anecdotes observed and recorded while children work in the classroom
- samples of children's problem solving efforts, with scoring guides
- interviews with individual children about their developing number concepts and computational strategies.
