Ideas for the main page

From Math Images

Jump to: navigation, search

Hi Maria,

We compiled a list of changes we think would improve the page. The current version reflects the conclusions we (Gene, Abram, Iris, Xingda, Becky) came to on 7/22/10.

Contents

Organization of the front page

  • Move the thumbnail gallery up to the top right side. The general consensus seemed to be the that thumbnail gallery is an appropriate size, but having a link (possibly in the bottom right?) that says '[Click here to see the full thumbnail gallery]' would be a good way to allow people to see more if they wish. This link could redirect to the same page as clicking the '[Thumbnail Gallery]' link on the side bar, but for new users who are unfamiliar with the layout it might be helpful to have that extra link right next to the gallery.
  • Remove the navigating math images section
  • Add the sentence "Math Is For Everyone" to the "Welcome" section (put it right after "It's not just formulas"). Remove the "Math is For Everyone" section.
  • Add a section called Explore Fields of Mathematics. This should go under the thumbnail gallery. Also, a link saying '[Click here to explore more pages]' or something similar in the bottom right side?
  • Add the word "References:" or something to the mouse-over for Mathematics is the science of pattern, just to make it more clear what's going on. (Ignore where it says "No Mouseover" in the picture below).
  • The images that appear in the "Welcome" section should be clickable. Currently, the bottom one is clickable if you put your mouse in exactly the right spot, and the top one is not clickable.

Organization of the Side Bar

This is a proposed reorganization of the sidebar, that we think will better group links/pages according to who would look at the different pages and the kinds of tasks the pages help one accomplish.

Ideas about particular pages

Math Image Tools

This page lists all image pages that have some kind of interactive applet, but you would never guess it by the name. We should rename it. Also, it's unclear if it really belongs in the side bar, though at the moment the general idea seems to be that it does.

Math Images for Computer Graphics

There's some disagreement as to what should happen with this page. For one thing, some people (such as Gene) feel like Math Images for Computer Graphics deserves its own special place because computer graphics are used to make some of the images for this site. Others (such as Abram) feel that this site is fundamentally about using images to teach math, not about teaching math for the sake of creating images. Therefore, there could be a general page on "Math Images by function". One function would be computer graphics, another would be learning hard undergraduate concepts (see Anna's list of hard undergraduate concepts), others could be physics, engineering, economics, etc.

Thumbnail gallery

We're considering the idea of dropping sorting by field because field separators make the page less attractive. On the other hand, dividing things by field allows for structured browsing of thumbnails (e.g. a teacher tells you to browse and find an interesting page on geometry, because you've been studying geometry in class). Some suggestions for changing the layout for greater attractiveness (but still allowing sorting by field) include: just putting the field name on the left instead of using headings, having a button that allows the user to switch between sorted and unsorted browsing.

Also, we considered having a "See more" or "..." for each field (if we divide by field) or for the whole thing (if we don't). However, when we came up with this idea, we didn't realize that each field name was clickable, and clicking on the field name would give a complete image gallery for that field. If that link becomes more obvious, this may not be necessary.

Lastly, the "ImageDescription" tag or whatever it's called on individual image pages should maybe be renamed "ThumbnailDescription" so that writers will be alerted to the fact that the tile of the image will be the only identifying information on the thumbnail gallery.

Leave Feedback

There is a person who left feedback. We should answer it.

All site maintenance toolbox links

It's not obvious at first how these pages work, or what they do (especially the "permanent links" page). I don't know that we had ideas about when or how this should be clarified.

Browse images by...Field

Maria, we want the browse images by...field page to look like the picture below. We want all the pages to appear the moment we click on the browse images by field section. Moreover, right now, there seems to be a subheading in the browse images by...field called subcategories. Can we get rid of that??

Create a list/page of existing pages needing work

I realized that there are a few links to lists of pages needing work (some of the links are below). These lists seem to be automatically generated based on searching for particular tags in the source code of different pages, but page writers haven't been careful about these tags at all, so the lists may not represent anything meaningful at all. Also, it seems like there are many pages that are on these lists, but we don't really have access to them unless we search for them directly.

Maria, is there a way to generate a list (without these categories) of all the pages that are not ready for publication so that future workers can finish the page? Perhaps a list of all the pages that sill have the "work in progress" bar?
