*************************************** MathMagic Cycle 12: All Levels *************************************** The Database Challenge: One semi-nocturnal math teacher had to develop a database for a project he was working on. He began by deciding that base 10 was too limiting, so he decided to use base 17. His "numbers" were: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F,G and 10. To make the code challenging he began with the letters MM (any guesses why?) and a dash, and decided to use 3 digits starting with an A: MM-A** The fifth and sixth digits were going to be opposites, one low that grows and the other a high number that gets smaller. So he started with MM-A1H. His second code for the database then was MM-A2G and his third MM-A3F. 1) What do the first 17 codes look like? 2) If for his 18th database code he used MM-AHH, what is the 25th code? 3) If the 35th code was MM-AGH, what was the 50th code? 4) How many codes can be used before the fourth digit (A) has to be changed? HINT: Try using a grid ************************************************************************* How to Procure a PI (Profile Info) ************************************************************************* Although not all registered teams have filled out their DATABASE forms (Clear and present danger of being dropped - make this WARNING # 2 ) the process to find if someone is registered is now in place. This is how it works (copy/print/cut & paste...) send e-mail thus: TO: mail-server@mathforum.org SUBJECT: (leave blank) send /mathmagic/private/MM-AG2 (The last part (MM-AG2) are the codes you've been working with - These codes are "for real", and part of your job is to see if you can locate yourself. There's no set pattern for who's where. Play around and maybe you can find your own or someone interesting. The first 100 entries in the database are where you need to look. If you don't find it after a few tries, don't dispair. I will be telling each team what their code is shortly. Databases sent after 12/5 mid-day have not been entered yet. Good fishing ---------------- Be good and well MrH alanh@laguna.epcc.edu ps. Please leave a blank between the word send and the /mathmagic...part ==== =============
