Classroom use in Courses and Topics: Probability & Statistics: Samples and Experiments, Probability |
Duration of classroom use: One Class |
What did students learn? Application of Central Limit Theorem; value of simulation. |
What did students do with the resource? Students recorded estimates of PI as a function of the number of tosses. |
How hard was it for students to use? Very Easy |
Other classroom comments: The explanation page accompanying the tool is very good. |
Appropriate for: practice of skills and understandings, applications of a concept or technique |
Other Comments: When I used this tool, I had already discussed simulations and the Central Limit Theorem with students. I don't think this tool would be a good introduction to simulations because the use of simulation in this tool is more abstract than in other settings. |
What math does one need to know to use the resource? Central limit theorem; calculus (and trig) helpful as background for teacher (in case of student questions). |
What hardware expertise does one need to learn to use the resource? None |
What extra things must be done to make it work? Nothing--it worked just fine. One of the extensions mentioned in the supporting materials (changing needle length) is not supported by this applet (there is another applet that does support different needle lengths, but this applet is more straightforward). |
How hard was it for you to learn? Very Easy |
Explanation: All buttons were clearly marked; the support materials are well-written. |
Ability to meet my goals: Very Effective |
Recommended for: Probability & Statistics: Samples and Experiments, Probability |
