| Description: |
Download this Sketchpad file to investigate instantaneous rate using a model of a door operated by a door closer. Students explore the graph of the door's angle as a function of time, and find the limit as the difference between two times approaches zero. Use this activity as an introduction to the concept of derivative, even before using the term "derivative." This activity is part of a series of Sketchpad activities introducing the main topics of calculus. |

| Comment: | Very clear exposition of the heuristic investigation of the derivative. It does have an error; it refers to a function as f(x) even when there is clearly a t-axis instead of an x-axis. This is slightly confusing. |
