Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Interactive Texts

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Interactive math texts throughout the undergraduate curriculum

This talk addresses some of the issues involved with the use of interactive mathematics texts developed in MathKit throughout the undergraduate curriculum. Special emphasis will be put on Calculus, Differential Equations, and Numerical Analysis. With regard to calculus, the author will present samples of interactive laboratory experiments developed in MathKit to accompany The Calculus Reader (D. Smith & L. Moore, Duke University). Regarding Numerical Analysis, samples of interactive implementation of the basic numerical methods in MathKit by students under the direction of the author will be presented. Finally, a demonstration of how mathKit can be used to introduce interactively and efficiently the basic concepts involved in Ordinary Differential Equations. Throughout this talk, students experiences and involvement will be discussed as well as samples of their reports.
