Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Math Education Reform

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Roles for research mathematicians in K-12 mathematics education

A new program of postdoctoral fellowships for mathematicians has been funded, in which new Ph.D.s will spend half their time on mathematical research, and half their time working with master teachers on projects in K-12 schools. The first group of 4 fellows will be based at Case Western Reserve University; proposals have been submitted for additional sites around the U.S.

The objectives of this program are to strengthen the mathematical knowledge of K-12 teachers and students, while providing the postdoctoral fellows with a thorough grounding in K-12 mathematics education.

The philosophy, goals, and design of this program will be discussed.

Susan L. Addington, California State University, San Bernardino
