This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Constructing Topographic Maps from On-Line Data using Mathematica

Instructions for using Mathematica to create three dimensional and topographic maps of any region of the 48 contiguous states from on-line data will be presented.

Enthusiastic student response, in a calculus laboratory course at Michigan Technological University, has convinced the author that such maps are invaluable when introducing functions of two variables.
