The Preparation of Elementary School Teachers:
Thoughts of an Elementary Curriculum Writer

Over the past 5 years I have directed an NSF funded project to develop a K--5 mathematics curriculum consistent with the NCTM Standards, the TIMS [Teaching Integrated Mathematics and Science] Elementary Curriculum Project. A number of other programs with similar goals are now reaching the market. How should the existence of these curricula influence mathematics departments? In particular, how can our courses for elementary school teachers better prepare them to teach the new curricula?
