Geometry Working Group

Tuesday, July 10

We began with a general discussion about the focus of our projects. Christian Jensen brought some materials to experiment with, including dowels abd weights for a mobile project. We spent time experimenting with the dowels and weights to find balance point. We discovered by experiment that heavier weights are needed if the dowel masses are to be ignored.

This project could have a number of levels, from introductory activities with two weights to construction of centers of mass for solid triangles or triangles with massive edges to quadrilateral.

Other discussion centered about dissections. Kris had done some reading about plane dissections, but the project will probably focus on 3D dissections using various media. We also discussed extensions to investigate "Where is the math?"

We had a report from program committee representative and and a discussion about the pace of the program. Two people were interested in being involved with the international visitors next week in some informal settings.

We plan to spend some time in the lab working with Geometer's Sketchpad.
