Exploring Discrete Mathematics Summary
Monday - Friday, July 6 - 10, 2009
Together this week we continued to work on crafting counting problems across a variety of types and tried to form excellent solutions. Each group member shared both problems and solutions with the group via Google Docs. Basic groupings were classic permutation/combination problems, subsets-within-sets problems, maze-type problems and some other interesting counting problems outside these categories. We are continuing with proofing these problems and solutions for inclusion in a single website which we will share with both the PCMI and external communities.
On Friday, Joe Malkevitch from York College in Jamaica, NY, who was attending PCMI as part of the Designing and Delivering Professional Development sessions, attended our group meeting and presented some unusual - but related problems involving vertex coloring and triangulating polygons. We were particularly intrigued by the art-museum-guard series of problems he presented.
