Introduction to the Calculus Forum
Immediate goals
This is the first round. I will gladly welcome criticism and try to incorporate the comments as quickly as possible.
If may seem too ambitious, that's why there is very little on each page. The main idea is to put together a framework that can and will be updated and expanded.
I would like to make this as complete as possible, so please take a look at whatever of this intersts you and send me comments, either directly, anonymously, or how ever you may tend to reply. Verbal messages are not yet receivable at my site.
What this is
This is a modest beginning using the possibilities of some modern technology:
- the World Wide Web has hypermedia capabilities which allow use of documents of all types,
- the geometry forum is a nice starting point. An National Science Foundation Grant has made this possible. I hope to personally sustain it, with or without further funding.
- with the use of electronic mail, updates can be made quickly.
The material available through this forum is designed to help mainly High School teachers and maybe their students as a first place to look for Calculus resources. I'm hoping the design, connections, and format will make it useful for the first-time user as well as the more experienced Web Surfer. I do hope this will be a regular bookmark on your web browser. I personally have access to a SLIP connection but must also use Lynx through a college connection. I understand all the possible problems with viewing material on the web, I will try to have a reasonable presentation for all viewers. I may be biting off more than I can chew at this point, but I'm not afraid of the challenge. Either way, please let me know what you think!
What you need
All you need is a way to view the World-Wide Web (WWW). Some of the areas may require you to have a special program loaded on your computer. For instance: I have a link to an exploration of an interactive Vectors using The Geometer's Sketchpad 3. You can set your Web browser to use Sketchpad as a "helper" application.
The Comment Form
I don't claim to have all or many answers as to how to use the WWW, but I'm hoping that this page will allow for discussions which will bring us all to a better understanding and create a Calculus Community. I very much welcome your criticisms and suggestions.
Please do try out the entire page. Help me figure out how to set this up right!
Copyright, but ...
All this can be freely used in any context which is free to users, provided proper attribution is made. I will also do the same.
Acknowledgements
The following people provided very useful ideas, but lack of success isn't their fault:
Annie Fetter, Steve Weimar, David Wexler, Sarah Seastone, Ken Williams, and all the Advanced Geometry Forum Institute folks.
