However, it is very, very intersesting to most kids when it's approached as though it all makes sense and all connects through patterns and relationships. Try to get Benjamin into situations where he can explore mathematics on his own or with another kid (or with you). Resist the temptation to tell him answers. Let him mess with math and not worry so much about keeping up computationally with his class. If he can learn to think he will be worlds ahead of his peers who can only memorize - technology continues to make those people more and more obsolete.
