You said you tried pressing 2nd down.  That turns the screen off.  

You should press 2nd (gold key) and then press the up cusor key.  If
you lift your finger, you have to again press the 2nd key then the up
cursor again.  If you get it too bright, then use 2nd key and press
down cursor.
