From: Roger <rbreen@fccj.edu> To: Teacher2Teacher Public Discussion Date: 2007120512:12:34 Subject: Whence expanded notation Expanded notation came into use through the SMSG program about 1962. It was part of the "new math". Rather then using expanded notation to show students why the addition of the digits in numerals resulted in the correct answer, it was used to teach addition. The result was disasterous. It is however, very useful when changing the numeral for a number in one base system to the numeral for the the number in another base system.
