Cathy - You might get hold of the land surveyors in your area and have them come out and do an activity with your class. There used to be a contest called TRIGSTAR which was supported by the association of surveyors. They have new interesting equipment and I'm sure they would like to share with your students and maybe provide them with a REAL problem.
