Kathleen, After reading Claudia's answer I would like to tell you that one of the difficulties that students always encounter is: "Why do you start with 0 instead of 1?" The answer is that you are starting NOW! There has been no change. Aside from developing a chart, you can also draw and label some pictures. For many children once the problem is READ TO them they can go about finding a solution. Their problem is reading, not the mathematics. -Marielouise, for the Teacher2Teacher service
