Allen School, Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaCatherine Wester is the Librarian and Technology Teacher Leader at the Dr. Ethel D. Allen Elementary School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She has been a participant in the Math Forum/Urban Systemic Initiative 1997 Summer Institute in Philadelphia, and in Saturday workshops throughout the 1997-98 school year in Swarthmore.
In May of 1997, Catherine created a basic Web page for her school as a Classroom Project for the School District's Technology Challenge Grant. She has also done some Web work for the Strawberry Mansion Cluster.
During the summer of 1997, she began a subject-based Web page at the Math Forum/USI summer workshop in Philadelphia. She used some of the skills learned at this workshop and other Math Forum Saturday workshops in creating another more complete subject Web page for a class project about Kwanzaa, including a comprehensive bibliography of Kwanzaa materials, links to other Kwanzaa sites, and several Kwanzaa-related lesson plans linked to School District of Philadelphia's Standards (the math lesson plan is linked to national Standards as well). She is planning to create a new math lesson plan for this page that will combine the curricular areas of social studies, art, and math by using tessellations to create African-inspired patterns for mkekka and cloth.
Catherine hopes that online participation in the Math Forum summer institute will help her acquire additional web skills; increase her confidence in her ability to incorporate math into cross-curricular activities; introduce her to new math ideas and concepts; add to the skills that a TTL needs in order to give turn-around support; and help her to transform the Allen Web page into an informational site to which the teachers at Allen will contribute.
