1. Make a design.
2. Make a symmetrical pattern.
3. There are two Basic Rules for mathematical play with pattern blocks:
• The Lie Flat Rule: All blocks must lie with their largest face flat on the surface.
• The Fit Flush Rule: The sides of adjacent blocks must be flush up against each other and share at least one vertex.
4. In a group, generate a set of FIVE patterns that use the Basic Rules and are very different from one another. Use the pattern block templates to record each pattern.
5. As a class, let us compare, contrast and try to classify the patterns we have generated.
