THE BASIC RULES AND GENERATING PATTERNS
- Make a design.
- Make a symmetrical pattern.
- There are two Basic Rules for mathematical play with pattern blocks:
- The Lie Flat Rule: All blocks must lie with their largest face flat on the surface.
- The Fit Flush Rule: The sides of adjacent blocks must be flush up against each other and share at least one vertex.
- In a group, generate a set of FIVE patterns that use the Basic Rules and are very different from one another. Use the pattern block templates to record each pattern.
- As a class, let us compare, contrast and try to classify the patterns we have generated.
