77 Squares

The "77 Squares" project can be very useful, as a review sheet in which students write all the theorems for a chapter, or even a quarter, of Geometry. It folds up into a tiny "package" which will fit into a pocket, or a purse. A student can study this "reviewee" while riding on the bus, waiting in the lunch line, or during a study hall. Of course, the students must be reminded that they must not use it during a test! Some teachers do give "open notes" tests, and in that case this ‚"reviewee" would be very helpful.

But even if the student created it and then never looked at it again, it would have served its purpose: the process of writing these notes will help the student to remember them. Writing the theorems reinforces remembering them, much more than just reading them in the book.

77 Squares Pattern: Write notes, theorems, etc, in each small square, and cut the pattern out. (The student may want to write his or her name on the top left square.) Then cut on the thick line within the pattern. Fold squares in alternating directions, starting at the top left, until you have a small stack of single squares as shown directly below the pattern.

The example below (which only shows a few of the 77 squares) demonstrates how a student might in fill the squares with review information:
